Environmental protection at the ECB
As a European institution, we have a role to play in protecting the environment and fighting climate change. To improve our environmental performance and reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible we adopted an environmental policy in 2007 and have been registered with the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 2010.
Since 2008, we have:
reduced our carbon emissions per workplace by 75%
reduced our energy consumption per workplace by 36%
reduced our water consumption per workplace by 22%
In 2019 we have:
introduced a deposit system for take-away coffee cups and phased out individually packaged snacks in meeting and conference areas
participated for the first time in the European Week for Waste Reduction
further fostered biodiversity by installing new insect hotels as well as bat and bird houses on our premises
