Sergei Guriev

Biography

As Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Sergei Guriev is responsible for the Bank’s research and for advising the President and other senior members of the management team on economic issues.

Dr Guriev received his MSc from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1993, and his PhD and DSc from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994 and 2002 respectively. From 1997 to 1998 he visited the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a post-doctoral placement, and from 2003 to 2004 he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Princeton University's Department of Economics. From 2004 to 2013 he was a Professor of Economics and Rector of the New Economic School in Moscow. Since 2013 he has been a Professor of Economics at Sciences Po, Paris.

He is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, London, and is President of the Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics. He has been a member of the boards of several financial institutions and charitable foundations, the President of Russia’s Council for Science and Education, and the Scientific Council of the Bruegel think tank and has served on the Academic Advisory Board of the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. In 2006 Dr Guriev was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. From 2009 to 2011 he was included in the top 100 of the President of Russia’s Cadre Reserve.

Dr Guriev’s research interests include contract theory, corporate governance, political economics and labour mobility. He has been published in international journals including the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, the Economic Journal, the Journal of the European Economic Association, and the Journal of the American Political Science Review.
